The Hougham Arms

The Houghams were once a wealthy and influential family with links to minor royalty and influential people. This website has been developed to record our past and preserve it for future generations

From its origins in Scandinavia, the family really began in the 12th Century in Folkestone in Kent, England. Today family members can be found in all continents, with concentrations in England, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada

How the family tree came about. The inspiration for this family tree came from Marian Pratt’s “Hougham or Huffam of Kent” published in Utah in the 1950’s.

Dover Castle. Several d' Avranches (forerunners of the Houghams) held key appointments at Dover Castle.

Huffam and Son. Christopher Huffam was the godfather of Charles John Huffam Dickens. Was Dickens' godfather a model for Dombey and Son?

Barton Court in Canterbury, Kent, was owned by the Hougham family from 1657 until 1902. But its origins go back to 605 CE.
